Who owes what

Person 1$48.19
Person 2$21.37
Person 3$24.82

Bill $94.38: items $74.75 + tax $6.17 + tip $13.46. Tax and tip are shared in proportion to each person's items, and leftover cents go to the largest fractions so the shares add up to the bill.

The link holds the split after the # in the address, which browsers never send to doddo's server. Anyone you give it to can read the names and amounts, and so can the app you send it through.

Tools use the numbers you enter. They do not check live terms, eligibility, limits, account balances or whether a quote is still available.

How do you split a bill fairly with tax and tip?

Start with the items. An item one person ordered goes on that person's share. An item a few people shared is divided equally among them, and an item for the whole table is divided by everyone. Adding up each person's items gives their subtotal.

Tax and tip then follow the subtotals. Say Alex's items come to $70 and Sam's to $30, the tax is 8% and the tip is 20% of the items. Tax is $8.00 and tip is $20.00. Alex owes $70.00 + $5.60 + $14.00 = $89.60 and Sam owes $30.00 + $2.40 + $6.00 = $38.40, which adds up to the $128.00 bill. An equal split would have charged each of them $64.00.

Money moves in whole cents, so some amounts do not divide evenly. The calculator rounds every share down, then hands the leftover cents out one at a time to the shares with the biggest fractions, so the shares always add up to the bill. When one cent is left from a shared item, it goes to the person who has had the fewest extra cents so far, so it does not land on the same person every time.

Tip is figured on the items before tax unless you switch it to items plus tax. Tax rates differ by state and city, so use the rate or the amount printed on your receipt. If only some items on the receipt are taxed, spreading the tax by items is an approximation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill by what each person ordered?

Add one line for each item and tap the people who shared it. Leave an item on Everyone if the whole table split it. The calculator adds up each person's items, then shares the tax and tip in proportion.

Should tip be split equally or by what each person ordered?

This calculator splits it in proportion to each person's items. If everyone ordered about the same, an equal split gives nearly the same amounts. If orders differ a lot, the proportional split is closer to what each person ran up. Agree on the rule with your group before you pay.

Is tip figured before or after tax?

Both are common, so the calculator lets you choose. The default is the items before tax. Switch "Tip is figured on" to items plus tax if your group tips on the total. A tip you enter as a dollar amount ignores this setting.

Does this receipt splitter scan a photo of the receipt?

No. You type each line in, so the receipt never leaves your device. Enter prices after any item discount, and enter an automatic service charge as the tip amount.

Is anything I type saved or sent?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and keeps nothing. If you copy a link, the split goes in the part of the address after the # sign, which browsers do not send to doddo's server. Anyone you give the link to can read the names and amounts, and so can the app you paste it into.

Can I keep a running tally for rent or a trip?

This calculator forgets everything when you close the page. To track shared costs over time with doddo Split, you need a doddo account, which keeps groups, balances and repayments. New accounts are on a waitlist for now, and Split does not move money.
