BANKS EXPLAINED
What counts as direct deposit? How banks define it for a bonus
What counts as direct deposit depends on who is asking. In everyday banking it means pay or benefits sent electronically to your account. For a bank bonus, the bank's own terms decide, and they differ from bank to bank. We read the bonus terms of nine banks on October 29, 2026 and compared how each defines a qualifying direct deposit, what it excludes by name and how much its current offer needs.
THE SHORT ANSWER
A direct deposit is an electronic ACH deposit of a paycheck, pension or government benefit sent by the payer. For a bank bonus, each bank's terms decide: Chase and U.S. Bank count only pay and government benefits, while Truist counts any ACH credit over $5. Seven of the nine banks we checked on October 29, 2026 name Zelle or other person-to-person payments as not counting, and none counts a mobile check deposit.

What counts as direct deposit?
A direct deposit is money a payer sends electronically into your bank account, usually over the ACH network, the Automated Clearing House that banks and credit unions use for electronic transfers. The CFPB lists direct deposit of paychecks as one kind of ACH transfer. The most common direct deposits are pay from an employer, pensions and government benefits.
Federal benefits are paid this way by law. The Treasury says 31 U.S.C. 3332 generally requires federal payments, other than tax refunds and other payments under the Internal Revenue Code, to be made by direct deposit unless a waiver applies, and the Social Security Administration says all federal benefit payments, including Social Security and SSI, must be made electronically.
What counts as direct deposit for a bank bonus?
For a bank account bonus, a direct deposit counts only if it matches that bank's written definition of a qualifying direct deposit. The definitions fall into three groups:
Banks can also decide how a deposit is coded when it arrives, so a deposit that looks like pay to you may not count for them. When the terms are unclear, ask the bank before your window starts.
- Strict: Chase counts an electronic deposit of your paycheck, pension or government benefits from your employer or the government, and U.S. Bank says other electronic deposits are not direct deposits.
- Regular income from a payer: Bank of America wants regular monthly income from your employer or other payer, PNC a recurring deposit from an employer or outside agency, and SoFi recurring income from an employer, payroll or benefits provider or government agency. Huntington names payroll providers and similar sources.
- Loose: Truist counts any electronic credit over $5 by ACH outside its exclusions, Capital One counts regular payments from an outside entity by ACH or the Real-Time Payments network, and Citizens counts recurring income deposited electronically.
Does Zelle count as direct deposit?
No. Zelle does not count as direct deposit for a bonus at any of the nine banks we checked. Chase, Huntington, Truist, Citizens and SoFi name Zelle as excluded, and U.S. Bank and PNC exclude person-to-person payments in general. Bank of America and Capital One do not mention Zelle, but both require regular income such as salary from your employer or another payer, which a payment from a friend is not.
Venmo, Cash App and PayPal transfers are excluded by name at Huntington, Citizens and SoFi. Zelle itself describes its service as a way to send money to friends, family and others you trust, not a payroll service. Venmo vs Zelle covers the two apps' fees and limits.
Does a transfer from another bank count as direct deposit?
Usually not. Chase excludes external transfers from a bank, brokerage or investment account, Bank of America excludes transfers from a bank or brokerage account, PNC excludes transfers from one account to another, and SoFi excludes bank ACH transfers. Capital One excludes transfers started on its own website or app, and Truist excludes preauthorized transfers and online transfers.
A few definitions are broad enough that the answer depends on how the deposit arrives, which is why the terms tell you to use payroll or benefits. If you plan to rely on anything other than pay or benefits, ask the bank in writing first. A deposit the terms exclude will not count toward the bonus, and the bank decides how each deposit is classified.
Do tax refunds, Social Security and unemployment count as direct deposit?
Social Security and other government benefits count at every bank above that lists examples: Chase, Bank of America, Capital One, U.S. Bank, PNC, Huntington and SoFi name government benefits or Social Security. Pensions are named by Chase, Bank of America, Capital One, PNC, Huntington, Citizens and SoFi, but not by U.S. Bank, whose definition covers a paycheck or government benefits.
Tax refunds are different. Chase lists tax refunds as not qualifying, and SoFi excludes IRS tax refunds, even though a refund arrives electronically. Unemployment benefits are government payments, but none of the nine pages names them, so check with the bank before counting on one.
Does a payroll provider or gig app payout count as direct deposit?
A paycheck sent through a payroll company such as the one your employer uses is still pay from your employer, and SoFi and Huntington name payroll providers explicitly. Payouts from gig or marketplace apps are less clear. SoFi excludes merchant transactions such as PayPal, Stripe and Square, and Chase and U.S. Bank count only an employer or the government. If most of your income comes through an app, ask the bank whether its payouts qualify.
How much direct deposit do bank bonuses require?
Bank bonus direct deposit requirements range from setting up any direct deposit to $10,000 within 90 days. The amount, the number of deposits and the window all matter. Capital One wants two deposits of $500 or more, while U.S. Bank wants at least two deposits that add up to the tier total. SoFi starts counting from your first deposit, not from account opening.
Many employers let you split a paycheck between accounts. A split deposit still comes from your employer, but check that the amount reaching the new account meets the bank's minimum for each deposit and in total. The bank bonus tracker lists current offers with their deposit rules, and the bonus value calculator weighs a bonus against fees and the time your money is tied up.
Direct deposits needed for each bank's top checking bonus
How can you tell if a deposit will count as direct deposit?
Read the bonus terms for the phrase "qualifying direct deposit" before you open the account, then set up the deposit with your employer or benefits payer using the new account and routing numbers. Bank of America's definition says the deposit is made using the account and routing numbers you give the payer. After the deposit arrives, the CFPB says a bank or credit union must make direct deposit funds available on the next business day.
Keep a copy of the offer terms from the day you opened the account and note the end of your deposit window. doddo's bank tracker turns one opening date into the deposit, payout and close dates and shows them under Coming up in your inbox. It does not ask for bank passwords or link bank accounts, and new accounts are on a waitlist for now. The Chase checking bonus page and Capital One checking bonus page show each offer's full terms.
